    Product Description:
Tin(II) chloride dihydrate (SnCl₂·2H₂O) is a white crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water and ethanol. It is a common and versatile inorganic compound, primarily known for its strong reducing properties. The anhydrous form is also commercially available, but the dihydrate is more frequently handled due to its stability. Its primary application is as a powerful reducing agent in organic synthesis, particularly for the reduction of nitro compounds to amines, the reduction of quinones to hydroquinones, and in various other reductive transformations. It is also a key reagent in the Stephen reduction for converting nitriles to aldehydes. Beyond synthesis, it serves as a mordant in dyeing processes and as an electrolyte additive in tin-plating baths for the electroplating of metals, functioning as a surface treatment and passivation precursor. The compound must be handled with care as it is corrosive and can cause skin and eye irritation. It is typically stored under an inert atmosphere to prevent oxidation to tin(IV) species.
