    Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA-2Na, CAS 139-33-3) is a white, crystalline powder with the molecular formula C10H14N2Na2O8·2H2O. It is a water-soluble chelating agent, forming stable complexes with a wide range of di- and trivalent metal ions, most notably calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺). Its primary application is as a pharmaceutical excipient, where it functions as a chelating agent, stabilizer, and antioxidant in various formulations, including ophthalmic solutions, injectables, and topical products. It prevents metal-catalyzed degradation of active ingredients and enhances preservative efficacy. In analytical chemistry, EDTA-2Na is a standard reagent for complexometric titrations, particularly for the determination of water hardness (Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺ concentrations). It is also widely used in molecular biology (e.g., in TE buffer to inhibit nucleases), industrial processes (e.g., textile and pulp/paper processing), and as a food additive (sequestrant). While generally considered safe at low concentrations in regulated applications, EDTA can affect the bioavailability of essential minerals and is subject to environmental concerns due to its persistence and ability to mobilize heavy metals.
