It is a diamagnetic, air- and moisture-sensitive solid that typically forms orange crystals. Its structure features a zirconium(IV) center sandwiched between two cyclopentadienyl (Cp) rings, with two chloride ligands completing the coordination sphere. This compound is a fundamental and versatile precursor in organometallic chemistry and materials science. Its primary industrial and research applications are as a catalyst or catalyst precursor. It is a key component in Ziegler-Natta type olefin polymerization catalysts, particularly when activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO), for the production of polyolefins. Furthermore, it serves as a crucial starting material for synthesizing other zirconocene derivatives, such as zirconocene hydrides and alkyls, which are important in organic synthesis for reactions like hydrozirconation of alkenes and alkynes.
