2-Hydroxybenzoic acid, commonly known as salicylic acid, is a monohydroxybenzoic acid featuring a phenolic hydroxyl group ortho to a carboxylic acid group. Its primary application is in dermatology and topical pharmaceuticals, where it is used as an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) to treat conditions like acne, psoriasis, dandruff, and warts by promoting exfoliation of the stratum corneum. In the cosmetics industry, it serves as a key active functional ingredient in skincare products for its exfoliating and pore-clearing benefits. Additionally, it is a precursor in the synthesis of aspirin (acetylsalicylic acid) and various other pharmaceuticals.
