    Product Description:
Bromotrichloromethane is a halogenated organic compound with the formula CBrCl₃. It is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic sweet odor. It is denser than water and insoluble in water but soluble in most organic solvents. Its primary application is as a versatile reagent in organic synthesis. It is notably used as a brominating agent and a source of the trichloromethyl radical (•CCl₃). A key reaction is the Kharasch addition (atom transfer radical addition, ATRA), where it adds across alkenes in the presence of radical initiators to yield 1:1 adducts. It also serves as a solvent and an intermediate in the production of other chemicals. Historically, it was used as a fire extinguishing agent and refrigerant. However, due to its ozone-depleting potential as a halon (Halon 1011), its production and use are now heavily restricted under the Montreal Protocol. It is toxic upon inhalation and ingestion and is harmful to aquatic life.
